The Dept. of Aeronautics was established to supervise all phases of civil aeronautics in Ala. and to encourage and promote aeronautical safety. These publications include serials, annual reports, directories, bulletins, and charts that discuss airports, aviation, and economic development. Asa Rountree, the director of the Dept. of Aeronautics for over thirty years, figures prominently as well.

Rountree was director of the Ala. Dept. of Aeronautics for over thirty years and was mostly responsible for the growth of that agency and the development of municipal airports in Alabama from 1933 to 1966. He was very active in many civic and aviation organizations. Rountree was preparing a history of Alabama aviation at the time of his death in 1983.
